Applications open for temporary leasing of agricultural land

Riżorsi Agrikoli Malta will be opening applications for the temporary leasing of agricultural land to farmers classified under Categories 3, 4 and 5, as well as young farmers under the age of 41. The land will be leased for a three‑year period and must be used exclusively for the cultivation of food crops.

This scheme forms part of RAM’s ongoing efforts to ensure that agricultural land is used in a productive, fair and sustainable manner, while supporting active farmers who wish to expand their operations. Land that is temporarily placed under RAM’s administration will be allocated transparently, based on clear criteria.

Eligible farmers may apply to lease agricultural parcels managed by RAM, provided they are actively engaged in farming and meet the eligibility requirements outlined in the Guidelines. Applications will be assessed through a points‑based system, which takes into account factors such as the applicant’s farming experience, the proximity of the requested land to existing cultivated parcels, the quality of the cultivation proposal, and the use of environmentally responsible practices.

Each application will be assessed individually, and farmers may apply for more than one parcel by submitting a separate application for each site. The lease will be granted for a fixed period of three years, in line with the Valuation of Agricultural Land Regulations, and beneficiaries will be expected to cultivate the land throughout the lease period. Regular administrative and on‑site checks will be carried out to ensure compliance with the scheme conditions.

Applications must be submitted online through RAM’s website, together with all the required documentation. Farmers are encouraged to carefully review the Guidance Notes before applying to ensure that applications are complete and eligible.

This initiative aims to continue strengthening Malta’s agricultural sector by improving access to land, encouraging active cultivation, and supporting both established and young farmers in contributing to national food production.
